◉◉ Wiki entry on Type-0 synopsis.
◉◉ Rem's soul is one of the key loci within Orience's overarching prophecy, with her harboring the throne of love. At one point in time during these spirals, the "Mother-Creator" decided that Rem's (along with the loci of Fear, Suffering, and Age) were no longer necessary, so they "cast out" these four. Except, these loci would continue to stick around, whether directly within the spiral (fear+love), or observing adjacent to it as the spiral turned (suffering+age). We know these spirals have been going on for 600,104,972 revolutions; meaning that even though her soul had been abandoned by the divine, Rem has experienced these prior revolutions as well, albeit with a sense of deja-vu and a meta-ish "the soul remembers" sort of way. She's just one of the ~lucky~ ones to be continuously reincarnated in a perpetually doomed world.
Canon Point: Post-death, right as she crystalizes.
Canon Iteration: OG
★ Folkmore Roles & Attributes ★
Skills:
- ◉◉ Athletic, agile, felxible. Does a lot of flips in combat. Stronger than she looks. Good at dodging, and fast enough to the point she can stand on other people's swords. When she was still fully human, she was able to survive falls from 2-story buildings ala JRPG style.
◉◉ Intuitive, keen on engineering and innovation. Post-canon, after her soul is pardoned, she and another character usher in a new age by bringing in new, non-magic-based energy and engineering to their world.
◉◉ Recon, infiltration, military stuff.
◉◉ Can pilot a space-faring airship, enemy mechs, machine guns. Give her a piece of equipment and she'll figure out how to use it, no problem.
Canon Abilities:
- ◉◉ Combat. Rem wields twin daggers, and she has a few different abilities to supplement his combat. Here is a list. Rem's daggers are stored in crystal hammerspace. Rem practices in the art of manalchemy (magic+alchemy), which is the art of transfering magic/energy into different kinds. Canonically, Rem practices this in a way with siphoning magic (i.e. "Siphon Sphere") or the soul (i.e. "Siphon Delta") from an enemy. This subset of transferring soul-power/life essence to use as power is a classified type of research in her world. Despite not initially being privy to its formal research, Rem still was able to develop this power on her own.
◉◉ Killsight. In canon, "killsight" is an ability in which a party member can observe an enemy and strike a one-hit-kill, despite how large or formidable the enemy is. It should be noted that killsight is different than your regular strike-at-weak-point-or-artery: canon states that this effect is used as the basis for the Death spell that inflicts a killsight status onto an enemy, so that simply any attack at any point may one-hit-kill them.
◉◉ Magic. In Type 0, all of the playable characters can wield magic, although their capacity tends to vary depending on the prowess and the amount of MP they have. Rem is known to excel at magic, and her stats put her in the #1 spot in all magic compared to other units. As depicted in scenes and in the manga, she seems to favor fire, lightning, and healing spells. A full list of the magic can be found here. The "unique" spells on this list (Ultima), are something that I believe she would have been working on at end-canon, but has not had the chance to practice as necessary before she became chair-ridden from her illness. In the manga, Rem is even shown to overcome a magic-negation device by brute-forcing her power. Canonically, Rem can either come in mere contact with a harvested soul or consume it to replenish her magic.
◉◉ Summoning/Eidolons. Summoning in Type-0 requires an actual human sacrifice. When she was still human, Rem would summon Eidolons by sacrificing herself for the cause. Extra notes on this:
- ◉◉◉ Canonically, those of Class Zero who summon Eidolons are brought back by Al-Arecia each time because they're ~special~, but this privilege is not afforded to anyone else, and it's equally not boasted by the class for secrecy (because why tell the rest of the soldiers that have been sacrificing themselves for Eidolons this entire time). The exception to this "must-sacrifice-oneself" rule is that Rem, at her current canon point, is a l'cie. L'cie are able to siphon phantoma/souls from others and still remain alive in order to summon an eidolon.
◉◉◉ A list is here. In addition to these Eidolons in the base game, Eidolons of the Ixion, Ramuh, Leviathan, Ultima, and the Phoenix also appear in the Awakening game. She can summon all of them at her canon-point. Verboten Eidolons, of course, would necessitate the harvesting of others' souls as well.
◉◉ Phantoma gathering. Phantoma = soul/life-essence. Rem extends her hand out towards a deceased person or fiend, and she can extract their phantoma from their corpses. See here for a video. She can use this to replenish her magic, and she can carry this with her before turning the soul in to enhance spells at the Altocrystarium. Naturally, the harvesting of the dead's phantoma isn't exactly boasted as an ability-- it literally involves taking a creature or human's soul before it passes on. Yikes. Canon notes that l'cie can reap up to half a nation's population of phantoma at once.
◉◉ Primus l'Cie. When fully activated in this mode, Rem gains superhuman strength, senses, speed, and both extraordinary physical and magical recovery times. Auto-haste/regen/protect/shell are applied. Her eyes glow red, she is able to fly (with or without the phoenix-type wings), cloak herself and her weapons with fire, and basically withstand a lot of damage.
- ◉◉◉ Additional note: Primus l’Cie have been shown in canon to wipe out entire cities with an attack, create giant craters of a continent in their wake, eradicate battalions of soldiers with a single attack, and life-siphon from multiple living people for their summonings. See their world's map's highlighted portions for areas of their globe that a l'cie either caused or survived. (Here are the same areas transposed on earth, for sense of scale.) Definitely expecting nerfs for non game breaking purposes!
Role: Legend
Role Qualities/Attributes: She will have a pair of crystalized wings on her back. Small enough to hide beneath clothes (and for her to not notice), but which can grow and extend outward. When in full l'cie mode, these will be the basis for her wings.
Role Reasoning:
In the previous cycle of their world, Rem was the "Judge"-- the arbiter who deemed humanity unfit, condemened them, and destroyed their world, thus triggering a new revolution to begin. Characters postulate that she became judge due to her intense wish for peace (in a warped if-everyone-is-dead-there-will-be-peace) sort of way. In this last cycle, Rem does not become Judge, but she still makes choices that ultimately cost her humanity and life. Her being a legend fits along with her intentions: she wishes to protect others, and she wishes for peace.
★ Personality ★
Option 1.
Upon first meeting Rem, a first impression might be that she's not a child of war, that she's not a soldier, that she's not experienced her home village being burned to the ground because of a border skirmish, and that she's not known anything along the lines of poverty, famine, plague, and massacre. In other words, a first impression of Rem is that, despite all of the aforementioned things have indeed happened to her, she's quite well-adjusted and resilient. To some, she might appear simply an ordinary student... and that's perfectly fine by her.
Rem's ability to overcome her hardship and smile in the face of it defines her character for about three-quarters of Type-0's story. To her peers, she's kind, charitable, soft-spoken, and always someone who is available to talk. Readily able to lend a shoulder to cry upon, or even seek someone out should she notice that they are unwell or stressed. Rem is also one of the few soldiers to pay respects to those fallen before. In a world where some cadets don't even know what a cemetery is or what good it does, her honoring the forgotten is seen as an unnecessary but kind gesture.
Rem's first priority is, and always has been, helping those for whom she cares-- no cold-hearted, cynical, "war-torn" soldier here, nope, even if she has all the reasons to be! As the war escalates in canon and the missions become both more trying and cruel in nature, she remains encouraging and believes in a cause for prosperity. No matter what ordeal her commanders put her through, she's both supportive and patient-- too much so in the case of Machina, her childhood friend and sweetheart. War and battle are not reminders to her that the world is cruel and unfair, but that it can be better, and that peacetime is worth fighting for. She strives for her country and her sovereign Crystal, yes, but more importantly, she raises her blades to defend those who would otherwise harm those dear to her. While she doesn't particularly enjoy war itself, she can-- and will-- kill as necessary; over her career as a cadet, she's slaughtered as many soldiers as monsters, if not more.
Coming from a world in which the Crystals' blessing is that all forget the deceased, she skirts an almost blasphemous path in wanting to keep others close and safe, if only that means she can remember them. To protect her loved ones, and especially Machina, there is no price she wouldn't pay-- and this, unfortunately, ends up being part of her tragedy.
So, with this context in mind: in terms of what she would be willing to go through to realize her full potential, it wouldn't be so much as Rem consciously believing that she's doing this for herself, but for others. And when she puts others at the forefront of her mind, she stops at nothing. She will give up her life for others' sake, she will exchange her humanity for power, and she will do so all with the belief that this is for the best. All the while, she will not tell others what she plans to exchange or sacrifice for whatever means or power she (believes she) needs to protect them. Rem ultimately believes that such choices are ultimately worth sacrificing for, and that decision should be respected, whether made by her or others.
